Welcome to ICan'tOpenIt
Published June 10, 2026
A first look at our client-side file viewer and the formats we support on day one.
We built ICan’tOpenIt because we kept running into the same small frustration:
someone sends you a .docx, a .obj, an obscure .tsv, or a 3D scan, and your
machine has no idea what to do with it.
Upload it here instead. The file never leaves your browser — every viewer is a short piece of JavaScript that pulls the relevant library (PDF.js, three.js, mammoth, SheetJS, …) only when you actually need it.
What’s supported today
- Images: PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, SVG, BMP, ICO
- Video & audio: MP4, WebM, Ogg, MOV, MP3, WAV, FLAC, Opus, …
- Documents: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, Markdown, plain text, HTML
- Source code: pretty much anything Prism.js understands
- 3D models: OBJ, glTF/GLB, STL — with rotate/zoom out of the box
- Archives: ZIP, plus APK, IPA, JAR/WAR
- Fonts: TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2
That’s more than 140 formats on day one, and the directory is searchable so you don’t have to memorise any of them.
What we won’t do
- We won’t upload your files. There is no backend for the preview flow.
- We won’t show ads. There’s no room for them in a brutalist layout anyway.
- We won’t track you. The only thing this site stores in
localStorageis your theme preference.
Drop a file on the home page and tell us what we missed. We’ll keep adding formats — and pull requests are welcome.
